It’s Saturday and I’m waking up thinking about my enslaved ancestors. Not only that, but the state of being enslaved to an idea or doctrine. Even the idea of being covetous. Retaining as much as you can. Amassing greater and greater wealth and even falling into the never ending pursuit of the protection of much wealth.
This binding of yourself in these ways is fleshly or “of the flesh.” I even consider the white colonizing of the world. The most devastating malady to come upon the earth. The evils of such that we’re still struggle with the fallout in everything we do; if we take time to recognize it.
Most of us will make the best of it. Groping for this idea of freedom that seems to hang just outside of our reach. Not realizing we are in a cage of sorts that some of us have managed to hang a limb out of - calling it freedom.
So in this world of entrapment, we usually see the words of winners paraded in our faces. Billionaires shimmer as the pinnacle of what humanity wants to be. We are constantly being told to reach for the taste of freedom by getting to the prison bars and hanging a limb out. Is this All there is?
I now bring in the problematic Bible because even with all of its problems, it is still at its core an ancient book written by enslaved people. It is not a how to get rich in 50 verses or less book. It is also not the only source of its kind. Humble sources of encouragement are all around. They just focus less on prosperity gospel and more on spiritual strength. If that’s your bag.
If a spiritual journey is not your bag, the option to run to the prison bars is still there.
